“A superhero movie in your top ten of all time? Such an amateur move”. What my drunk friend (who consistently produces substanceless opinions) failed to comprehend is that this isn't just any superhero movie, this is the best superhero movie of all time, and it’s not close. The most iconic protagonist and the most infamous villain: Christian Bale and Heath Ledger put on an absolute show in an instant classic rivalry matchup of Batman vs The Joker. Police Lieutenant James Gordon and DA Havey Dent form an alliance to dismantle organized crime in Gotham City but the anarchist mastermind throws Gotham into disarray and forces Batman ever closer to crossing the line between hero and vigilante. Will Gotham fall to the Joker-facilitated chaos, or can Batman diffuse the mounting pandemonium? Chris Nolan’s most captivating work of art will have you locked in from the first second to the last.
* Note that this ranking includes Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises but it is the middle of the trilogy that stands above.
Expert Quotes
“Not only is this the best superhero movie of all time but it’s also the best Chris Nolan movie of all time. By that metric, yeah I’d say it has to be top 5 ever” - Player X
“The Dark Knight is just one of those movies that’s fucking sick the entire time. All gas no breaks type shit. If you’re not completely dialed in to The Dark Knight during your first watch, you shouldn’t be allowed to watch any movie ever again. This spectacle had me feeling like I was in Gotham. I was completely and totally immersed”.
“The plot is there. The action’s there. Actors are there. The profundity of the situation is there. From the comic book history of The Batman to a Chris Nolan cinematographic masterpiece, the Dark Knight just has that little boy from Rosario feel to it. On behalf of every little boy wearing his shirt… The Batman on a million backs.”
“Personally it’s my favorite trilogy of all time, and it’s definitely the best part of the trilogy. Does that make it my favorite movie of all time via transitive property, I don’t know, but it is certainly up there with the best of them”
“I mean, I thought the rest of the movie had to be a bit of a letdown after witnessing the best intro scene of all time. I mean, the Joker bank robbery has to be in the history books as the universal top dog in terms of sick villain intros, but the rest of the movie absolutely did not disappoint… think Lebron somehow out performing his near impossible career expectations as a high schooler”.

Expert Quotes
"Interstellar represents the pinnacle of sci-fi filmmaking – its visual effects create an utterly transportive intergalactic voyage, while the relationships give an emotional core that's rare for the genre. Watching McConaughey's face crumble into tears through his helmet is just next level."
“I knew rotten tomatoes was semi fraudulent when they gave Interstellar a 73% while allowing movies like Toy Story 2, Honeyland, Seven Samurai and Pinnochio (amongst many others) into the 100 percent club. Laughable stuff. They just don’t know ball the way we know ball over here at T and T”.
"The forgiveness scene between Cooper and Murph might be the most emotionally overwhelming moment I've ever witnessed in cinema. Its simplicity paired with the sci-fi grandeur is why Interstellar is in my top 10 of all time."
"I continue to be baffled that Interstellar didn't take home Best Visual Effects - the space imagery and physics-defying scenes make Gravity look like child's play."

This&That Expert Quotes
“Martian death beam to Earth. Pick one movie trilogy to save the fate of humanity? In my eyes, I have the Hangover beating The Dark Knight in 6 games in the championship. Some people will say a comedy series shouldn’t be able to get that 1 spot. To that I say, art is art”.
“The Wolf Pack. Sin City. How bout that ride in? You cannot consider yourself a fan of comedy, or a true American patriot until you watch all three of these movies back to back to back”.
“Some will say a comedy trilogy shouldn't be capable of having this high of a ranking. To that I say you need to take a personal day off of work, smoke some weed, watch all 3 parts and laugh your dick off to this epic series that is more action-oriented and profound than you might think”.
“Bradley Cooper backpacks the pack, but Alan is up there with one of the funniest movie characters of all time, and Chow made me felt something I didn’t know that humans were capable of feeling. He made me feel like I wanted to rob a bank and give it all to homeless people and then do lots of drugs as a celebration for my new role as the modern day Robin Hood”

“GWH lowkey just has that, best film ever produced, kind of feeling to it. Can’t really put my finger on why but that shit just hits diffy”
“You likely need to be checked out mentally if you're not rooting for the genius degenerate in Will Hunting. The homegrown orphan was clearly meant for greatness in some capacity. It’s great to watch him actualize his potential because of his chill psychologist and intimate lover girl”
“Damon’s intricate relationships with Robin Williams, Ben Afflack and Skylar serve as the foundation for this inspiring motion picture, but it’s the nuanced duo of the introspective psychologist Sean Maguire and brilliant mathematician Professor Lambeau that takes this movie from great to elite”.

Catch Me If You Can – 9.2
Release Year – 2002
Time – 2h 21m
Platform –Hulu, Amazon Prime, Netflix, Youtube, Google Play, Apple TV
Rating – PG13
Genre – Crime/Comedy/Biography
Director – Steven Spielberg
Cast – Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Christopher Walken, Martin Sheen, Nathalie Baye, Amy Adams
Steven Spielberg’s magnum opus is in the form of a jazzy biopic (based on a true story) which traces Leonardo DiCaprio’s cat and mouse game with the FBI. Leo AKA Frank Abengale is a gifted young con man who starts small and then inevitably attracts the attention of national intelligence agencies & Tom Hanks (AKA Detective Hanratty), the marquee FBI agent tasked with taking down the criminal mastermind. In the best ‘cat-and-mouse’ film of all time, Abengale is the elite offensive talent putting on the facade of a pilot, lawyer and doctor while Hanks is the shark on the hunt, looking to catch and destroy the twenty something year old running loops around the bureau. Hanks and Dicaprio put on a show for the ages in the balanced tale of the anti-system vs the system itself. This captivating caper crisscrosses the globe in a whirlwind of forged checks, false identities, and sheer audacity. If you dig the 1960s aesthetic this flick could entertain your inner rogue as you embark on this exhilarating chase that proves sometimes, it's not about who you are, but who you can become.
Expert Quotes
"Seeing 19 year old DiCaprio going toe-to-toe with Hanks during the cat and mouse chases are textbook examples of the passing of a generational movie star torch."
“Catch Me If You Can breaks into my s tier because of the full circle ending. The relationship between Hanratty and Abengale isn’t as simple as hero vs villain – it’s multilayered and they both know it. Because they end up as friends and Abengale ultimately takes his talents to the Bureau, the ending of the movie just feels right”.
“This is the best movie of all time that’s based on a true story”
"The intoxicating style and energy that oozes through Catch Me If You Can is infectious. Between Spielberg's lively direction, John Williams' jazzy score and DiCaprio's charismatic presence, it’s a nonstop thrill ride with meticulous 1960s aesthetics."
"In a film full of spectacular set pieces, the hotel scene when Hanks finally gets in the same room as Leo, and Leo still manages to escape, is quite simply brilliant cinema and a testament to Abengale’s ability to flash his charisma and manipulate those around him”.

Expert Quotes
“The film Shutter Island just non consensually came inside of my mind, and I kinda really liked it”.

“This is the movie that establishes Leo as the best actor of all time. His committed performance descending into possible madness shows the acting range no other star possesses. It’s a pulpy yet profound trip.”
“The ambiguity around the reality of Leo’s situation lets the haunting ending sear itself into your brain for endless interpretation and debate after the credits. One of those movies that you think about for a whole week after watching it”.
“Shutter Island and The Departed are neck and neck for Scorzese’s best production ever. I’m giving Shutter the one seed because of its heady and cognitive nature”.
"Shutter Island is a labyrinth of a movie, where every scene, every line of dialogue, has multiple layers of meaning. The eerie setting and haunting score amplify the sense of unease throughout the film."

Scorsese finally nabbed his Best Picture winner with this pulpy gangster diversion featuring a tormented Dicaprio and a cunning Damon in a game of cat-and-mouse as moles for their respective sides of the law. The Departed is a pulse-pounding game of deception and duplicity, orchestrated by the virtuoso Martin Scorsese. This gritty crime drama set in Boston is a masterclass in storytelling and tension. With what is arguably the most star-studded cast of all time (DiCaprio, Damon, Nicholson, Whalberg, Baldwin, Farmiga), the film delves deep into the blurred lines between law and the underworld. The intricate plot of double-agents and double-crosses makes for an electrifying watch, full of suspense and moral ambiguity throughout its entirety. The line between cop and criminal is as thin as the barrel of a gun in this compelling portrayal of loyalty, identity, and survival.
Expert Quotes
"Scorsese's mastery of the crime genre is fully evident in The Departed. The tension is palpable, the storyline complex, and the character arcs are deeply engaging. It's a film that hooks you from the first scene and doesn't let go. It’s the best crime movie of all time in my eyes”.
"The Departed’s intricate tale of cat-and-mouse is complemented by the setting of the shadowy Boston world of organized crime and police corruption. DiCaprio and Damon deliver some of their best work, bringing depth to their morally ambiguous characters."
"Jack Nicholson returning to scenery-chewing, homicidal form as mob boss Frank Costello stands tall in his gangster villain pantheon thanks to the conspicuous menace behind the theatrics. Nicholson’s portray of Costello is not only an elite display of a ruthless crime leader, but a multilayered depiction of a complex man, who also turns out to be an FBI informant; this is one of Jack’s best performances ever, marked by his eclectic mix of enigma and charisma”
"The ruthless elegance Scorsese films the climactic elevator sequence with is a masterclass in building unbearable tension through precise visual storytelling and editing. The elevator scene is in the history books and one of the most captivating scenes in all of cinema”.
"The narrative of The Departed is as unpredictable as it is compelling. It’s a rare film that combines stellar performances, a riveting plot, and a deep examination of its characters’ psyches. Not only is it the best Boston crime movie ever, it’s the best crime movie ever, period”.
“I continue to marvel at Scorsese’s ability to wield violence with both visceral grit and perfectly timed dark humor.”

Expert Quotes
"The Social Network isn't just a film about the founding of Facebook; it's a complex study of ambition, friendship, and the changing nature of connectivity in the modern world. Eisenberg's portrayal of Zuckerberg is nuanced and profoundly human. He delivers a towering, career best, Oscar-nominated performance, oozing intellectual arrogance but exposing the emotional vulnerability behind ruthless business tactics."
"From Sorkin's domineering script to the throbbing score to Fincher's montage-like pacing, The Social Network pulsates with energy. There’s just a certain frequency in this film that has the audience fixated – I don’t know if it’s because it’s based on a true story, because Garfield, Eisenberg and Timberlake dazzle with captivating personalities or because Fincher and Sorkin's collaboration is a cinematic alchemy. It's a modern classic that defines the ethos of an era."
“I like this movie so much because it’s a documentary at heart. It reveals the truth about Mark Zuckerberg. He’s a slick rat who built his empire on an idea that wasn’t his. The Winklevoss twins would have been the ones to revolutionize social media if they had an ounce of the computer science skills of Zuck”.
"The sequencing showing Zuckerberg obsessively blogging his ex-girlfriend then transitioning right into launching the initial stirrings of Facebook captures his poignant yet callous motivations."
"The film is a masterful blend of drama and historical retelling, providing a window into the ambition and drive that reshaped global communication. It's as much about the creation of a social empire as it is about the complexities of the human relationships that built it."

Genre: Biography, Drama, Comedy
Director: Martin Scorsese
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey, Kyle Chandler, Rob Reiner
The Wolf of Wall Street is a decadent, outrageous, and unapologetically excessive journey into the world of high-stakes finance, directed by the epochal Martin Scorsese and led by an enthralling Leo Dicaprio. The charismatic stockbroker plummets into a dizzying spiral of greed, debauchery, and unimaginable excess; with a dynamic cast including the uproarious Jonah Hill and the dazzling Margot Robbie, this cinematic tour de force will have you alternately laughing, cringing, and gasping in disbelief as you bear witness to Belfort's outrageous escapades. Scorsese crafts a frenzied narrative, in the midst of a whirlwind of lavish parties, unbridled ambition, and unchecked greed, fueled by a kinetic energy that mirrors the drug-fueled antics and moral bankruptcy of its characters. The Wolf is not just a film about financial fraud; it's a provocative commentary on the American dream gone awry. It's bold and unapologetic in its portrayal of Belfort's exploits, pushing the boundaries of moral ambiguity. The movie’s relentless pace and outrageous moments are balanced by sharp writing and dark humor, making it as entertaining as it is thought-provoking. Strap in and join the bacchanalian ride, as The Wolf of Wall Street revels in the hedonistic heights of Wall Street's golden age and the price one must pay to soar among the wolves.
Expert Quotes
“Let me be crystal clear – The Wolf of Wall Street contains the single greatest performance from Leonardo DiCaprio. His manic, unhinged energy as Jordan Belfort on quaaludes cemented itself in Oscars history. As much as I love Inception, Catch Me If You Can, Shutter Island, Titanic, The Revenant, The Departed, Django, Once Upon Time in Hollywood and every other iconic Leo role, his performance as Jordan Belfort stands above the rest”.
“Scorsese and Leo take you on a wild, no holds barred descent into unfettered American greed and excess that fascinates as much as it repulses. This movie is essentially the rich man’s version of American Hustle”.
“McConnaughey’s role was succinct but profound. He’s only in a couple scenes in the entire movie, but the Two Rules Scene (which was partially improvised)at lunch is one of the funniest and most iconic few minutes in all of cinema. “You gotta feed the geese to keep the blood flowing and have rhythm below the belt”... I mean c’mon. And the way he gestures the number two with the pinky and ring finger. The Wolf is Leo’s show but McConnaughey stole every morsel of attention during the few minutes that he appeared on the screen”.
“I’ll never forget watching Jonah Hill intuitively chomp into that goldfish in his star-making turn. His role in the Wolf is just as good as his performances in War Dogs and 21 Jump Street”.
"Scorsese’s portrayal of the highs and lows of Belfort’s life is a cinematic spectacle. It’s a film that’s as much a cautionary tale as it is an expose of Wall Street’s decadence."
"The Wolf of Wall Street is an audacious, high-energy film that exposes the hedonism and moral bankruptcy of its characters. DiCaprio's performance is both mesmerizing and disturbing, perfectly capturing the spirit of reckless ambition."

"Dev Patel's emotional, star-making turn as Jamal keys us compassionately into his individualism and integrity in the face of dehumanizing poverty, allowing us to root wholeheartedly for his against-all-odds triumph. Boyle amplifies both the vibrancy and hardship of Mumbai's slums as the perfect backdrop for Jamal's Dickensian rise - alternately gritty and poetic."
"The sequence combining Latika’s bold escape attempt with the climatic game show round seamlessly interweaves the film's central relationships with the central conceit."
"The haunting early imagery of young Jamal and Salim desperately sprinting through the slums symbolically foreshadows both the literal obstacle course ahead, their brotherly bond driving and differing values that drive their futures and thus the story."
Silence of the Lambs – 9.4
Release Year: 1991
Time: 1h 58m
Rating - R
Streaming: Amazon Prime Video, AppleTV and Hulu
Genre: Horror/Crime (Psychological Thriller)
Director: Jonathan Demme
Cast: Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Scott Glenn, Ted Levine, Brooke Smith
Silence of the Lambs stands as a pinnacle in the psychological thriller genre, seamlessly blending elements of crime and horror. The film introduces us to Clarice Starling, a young FBI trainee played by Jodie Foster, who is thrust into a chilling game of cat-and-mouse with Hannibal Lecter, a brilliantly manipulative and cannibalistic psychiatrist portrayed by Anthony Hopkins. The chilling, masterfully crafted horror/drama sinks its teeth into the darkest corners of the human mind. From the outset, the movie grips the audience with its intense and haunting atmosphere. Foster delivers a stellar performance, portraying Starling's determination and vulnerability with equal conviction, however, it's Hopkins' portrayal of Lecter that truly mesmerizes – his chilling performance is both sophisticated and terrifying, earning him an Oscar for a role that he immortalized with less than 20 minutes of screen time. Its legacy endures not only because of its thrilling narrative but also because of its profound insights into fear, obsession, and the human condition. A masterpiece of its genre, this film remains a compelling and deeply unsettling experience, as gripping today as it was at its release.
Expert Quotes
"Silence of the Lambs is a film that masterfully combines elements of horror, thriller, and drama to create a deeply unsettling yet compelling experience."
"Silence of the Lambs is a masterpiece of suspense and psychological horror. Foster and Hopkins deliver performances that are both chilling and deeply nuanced. Their cat-and-mouse tension builds breathlessly, and Hopkins' brilliantly understated menace earned him an Oscar for just 16 mins of screen time while Foster's navigating of Clarice's vulnerability and tenacity continues to inspire complex portraits of women in roles traditionally coded masculine over 30 years later."
“Demme drawing you into the mind of a psychopath killer feels revolutionary for a best picture winner - the empathy for such amorality was unprecedented. The movie's exploration of themes like fear, power, and manipulation is simply brilliant – It’s a psychological thriller that doesn’t just scare you; it makes you think."
"The first meeting between Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling creates instant tension through its visual symmetry - two formulated personas sizing each other up from opposite sides of glass and bars."
"Demme's use of POV shots during Buffalo Bill's kidnapping scenes disturbingly places the audience behind the eyes of a predator, implicating us in his male gaze and twisted psychology."

Maximus' gladiatorial exploits don’t go unnoticed as his quest for vengeance and ambition to restore the Roman republic back to its noble glory make him a hero to the people. The film brilliantly captures the brutality and grandeur of the Roman Empire, with stunning battle sequences and a powerful narrative. Crowe's riveting performance, coupled with Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of the malevolent Emperor Commodus, makes for an immersive watch. The film's score, composed by Hans Zimmer, adds to its epic quality, making it a cinematic experience that is visually, emotionally and musically engaging. The historical depiction is a must-watch – the context, the build up, the revenge tour, and finally the climax in the colosseum… this movie will leave you feeling inspired and ready to fight fire with fire towards anyone that’s ever wronged you.

Tarantino’s era-defining mosaic of LA is largely regarded as his magnum opus for good reason; Pulp Fiction reinvents the crime genre with its unique narrative structure, snappy dialogue, nonlinear plot and iconic performances as it weaves together interlocking stories of Los Angeles underworld figures, including a philosophical hitman, a boxer on the run, and a mob boss’s wife. Like many Taratino masterpieces, Pulp features iconic scenes and endless quotable dialogue – the witty yet philosophical discourse between Travolta (Vincent Vega) and Jackson (Jules Winnfield) throughout is what elevates this film from another Tarantino classic to one of the best movies of all time. The two’s complementary chemistry anchors the film as th
e charistically verbose mob enforcers are confronted with surreal experiences (ranging from dance competitions to accidental homicides), catalyzing the film’s cool, edgy vibe. Pulp is a wildly original, genre-defying masterpiece that intertwines the lives of an ensemble cast of eccentric characters, brought to life by Q money’s signature blend of razor-sharp wit and stylized violence. "Tarantino’s ability to create profound, character-driven stories within the framework of a crime film is unmatched, making Pulp Fiction a must-watch for any cinema enthusiast. Pulp is a masterful stroke by big Q and a gentle reminder that Chatability is the best ability.”
"That injection scene with Mia Wallace remains an all-timer - the combination of danger and odd domesticity as she mistakes heroin for coke still gives me chills. Uma Thurman's performance is just as unforgettable, particularly in the dance sequence with Travolta. Pulp is quite simply a cultural phenomenon”.
“Tarantino’s stylized writing and directing took arthouse and indie cinema fully mainstream, cementing himself as an auteur for the ages”.
“As a guy that’s watched every Tarantino movie three times, Pulp is the best and it’s not particularly close. Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, Inglorious, Django, The Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are all great films, but none of them touch Pulp”.

Rating - R
Streaming: Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, AppleTV
Genre: Drama, Western
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Cast: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, Samuel L Jackson, Quentin Tarantino, Don Johnson
Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino's audacious take on the spaghetti western set in the antebellum Deep South, stands as a masterful exploration of America's darkest history. The film is a visceral, unapologetic journey into this heart of darkness, where Quentin Tarantino rewrites history with a vengeance. Led by Jamie Foxx's powerful transformation from a broken slave to a vengeful hero and Christoph Waltz's charming yet deadly Dr. King Schultz, the picture delves into the brutality of slavery with Tarantino-esque blade-sharp dialogue, cathartic justice and pitch-black humor. Leonardo DiCaprio's portrayal of the charismatic but psychopathic slave owner Calvin Candie adds a layer of tension and complexity as Django’s long lost lover resides on his plantation. The deliciously wicked, mandingo-loving Dicaprio elevates this film from good to great during its climax at the precarious CandyLand. Visually stunning and underscored by a perfectly eclectic soundtrack, the film is an ingrained and emotionally charged journey, blending over-the-top action with a poignant narrative of love, revenge, and liberation. Django is a prime, blood-spattered, revenge-infused Tarantino odyssey, delivering a cinematic experience that's as thought-provoking as it is entertaining.
Expert Quotes
"Leonardo DiCaprio's Calvin Candie is a villain you love to hate; he brings a chilling charisma to the role, making every scene that he's in crackle with tension."
“Foxx brings palpable catharsis as Django tearing through oppressors as he seeks retribution for his bride, while Waltz shines brilliantly as Dr. King Schultz, blending his unique charm with a lethal edge. Django’s powerhouse embodiment of vengeance and heart, bringing to life a character who is as complex as he is compelling, and Waltz’s witty badassery makes for an unforgettable duo that stands as one of Tarantino's finest creations. Django Unchained is both Jamie Foxx and Chris Waltz’s best respective performances ever".
"While the final shootout in 'Django Unchained' is a masterclass in choreography and direction, it’s so absurd that it tips into the category of unrealistic, and it’s so long that it feels a little dragged out. The scene shows Tarantino's flair for the dramatics and it’s certainly a memorable ending, but Django would have been even better if Tarantino cut the film 15 mins and took 20% off the dramatic flair”.
"The juxtaposition of ruthless violence and dark humor in 'Django Unchained' is handled with the skill of a maestro by Tarantino, making the film an instant classic in his impressive repertoire. I continue to marvel at his ability to wield violence with both visceral grit and perfectly timed dark humor”.
"Django Unchained is a film that will stay with you long after you've seen it. It's a powerful and moving film that will make you think about the horrors of slavery and the fight for freedom."

Prisoners (orchestrated by the cognitively stimulating Denis Villeneuve) is a harrowing and intense thriller that delves deep into the heart of human despair and resilience. Hugh Jackman gives a powerhouse performance as the anguished father whose moral boundaries blur in the search for his missing daughter, matched by Jake Gyllenhaal's compelling portrayal of the lead detective. Jackman's simmering fury contrasts Gyllenhaal's calm pragmatism which makes way for an agonizing yet thoughtful mystery thriller. Prisoners not only captures visceral fears of helplessness against inscrutable evil, but also how far astray righteous crusades can spiral absent empathy. The film weaves a complex narrative, rich in suspense and moral ambiguity, set against a bleak and haunting backdrop that enhances the story's gripping tension; The picture lingers for those very ambiguities—an arresting thriller and a despairing tragedy of errors all at once as Villeneuve makes his claim for the 4th spot on the Mount Rushmore of modern directors (alongside the big 3 – Nolan, Tarantino, Scorseze) with this career defining piece of artwork.

“Prisoners stands as a testament to Villeneuve's ability to craft a psychologically intricate and emotionally impactful movie, leaving a lasting impression long after its unsettling conclusion. Prisoners might not be the most satisfying, feel-good watch, but god dammit it is superb cinema”
“Each member of the stellar supporting cast, including Maria Bello, Terrence Howard, and Viola Davis, adds depth and emotion to this dark tale of obsession and loss. Their characters' internal struggles add layers to an already sophisticated story."

"Gyllenhaal manifests stoic gravitas shadowed by doubt - his subtle performance keeps us questioning. His portrayal of Detective Loki is a masterclass in understated acting, bringing an ingenious complexity to a character driven by an unyielding search for truth."
"Through palpable immediacy and sustained tension, Villeneuve placed viewers in the impossible dilemma - the desire to find the girls yet recoiling at Jackman's increasingly unhinged measures. Incepshy is an immersive experience in the form of a psychological sci-fi thriller that delivers breathless action sequences while exploring surreal dreamscapes and the fragile nature of reality and consciousness itself.
Expert Quotes
“The concept of Inception really makes me think about where ideas come from. The most profound spectacle about being human is our ability to generate novel thoughts, formulate ideas and then implement them into society. The film made me realize the sheer importance of pursuing our own individuality and meshing with our own unique thoughts”.
“Nolan’s trademark visual audacity is matched by resonant emotional weight as DiCaprio anchors the film with anguish over lost love warring with professional hunger. The remarkable practical effects stand the test of time, keeping action dizzyingly grounded in tactile reality. Ultimately Inception unpacks blockbuster spectacle to reveal quintessentially human vulnerability behind any quest for greatness”
“The hallucinatory folding city scene transfixed me when I first saw it - they really filmed a whole rotating set to achieve that kind of radical perspective distortion live on camera.
The complexity of nested dream mechanics can be head-spinning, but Nolan keeps raising stakes through Elliot Page’s architecture and fluid editing across action scenes happening simultaneously.”
"Nolan conjures blockbuster spectacle, then deconstructs it to reveal vulnerable humanity - DiCaprio's anguished architect questing creative greatness yet craving connection holds affecting resonance."
“DiCaprio subtly captures heartbreak that resonates unexpectedly amid industrial corporate espionage - lending an emotional core frequently missing among puzzling narrative layers. I continue to marvel at Nolan's ability to construct puzzle-box worlds where emotional stakes pivot dreams collapsing - DiCaprio's grief over dissolving memories of his wife reads through each dimension."
"The ambiguity surrounding the spinning top in the final shot leaves tantalizing questions - is DiCaprio's dreamworld return a reality, fantasy, or something in between?"

Genre: Biography, Drama
Director: Jean-Marc Vallée
Cast: Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto, Jennifer Garner, Dallas Roberts, Craig Borten, Steve Zahn, Denis O’hare
Dallas Buyers Club is a raw and poignant portrayal of one man's battle against the AIDS epidemic and the bureaucratic healthcare system of the 1980s. After an HIV diagnosis in mid 1980s Texas, rough-and-tumble electrician Ron Woodroof (McConaughey) smuggles alternative antiviral medications after lack of FDA approval and founds a “buyers club” providing unapproved treatments to desperate patients. McConaughey and Leto deliver career-defining performances in this gripping medical drama confronting governmental neglect and pharmaceutical greed amidst a growing plague. The film is a gritty narrative of survival and defiance, as Jean-Marc Vallée handles this sensitive topic with an exquisite blend of brutal honesty and tender humanity; the film is not just a story about a fight against a disease, but a powerful statement on the resilience of the human spirit. The movie is one of my all time favorites because of its not-so-subtle commentary regarding governmental oversight + big pharma’s inclination to maximize profits by minimizing the public’s health – DBC serves as a reminder that many of the systems that govern our reality do not have our best interests at heart.
Expert Quotes
“Matthew McC has given some utterly tremendous performances in his career, but this one very well might be the top dog. Between Interstellar, Mud, The Gentlemen and a plethora of brilliant RomComs, the kid from Uvalde Texas has cemented himself amongst the all time greats but it’s his role as the rogue entrepreneur RonWoodroof that is his all time most captivating role”.
"Vallée carefully strips stereotypes to reveal humanity in unlikely saviors just trying to prolong life and spirits during a remorseless viral onslaught."
"In 'Dallas Buyers Club', McConaughey and Leto bring a raw, emotional depth to their roles, turning what could have been a standard biopic into a poignant narrative about fight and survival." - Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times.
“DBC is a powerful and moving film that tells the true story of Ron Woodroof, a man who refused to give up in the face of death. McConaughey gives a tour-de-force performance, and the film is well-made, emotionally resonant and just has that ‘elite cinema’ feel to it”.
"Vallée scalpel-slices open the plaque of bureaucratic indifference and profit pursuits enabling AIDS lackluster response - watching officials coldly confiscate unapproved medicines prolonging life ravages the soul."
"Dallas Buyers Club exposes government and big pharma patient dehumanization as the true life-threatening pre-existing condition - Woodroof's enraged activism against terminals denied emergent drugs channels righteous fury few films capture."
Instead it’s telling me what the Green Bay Packers would look like as Super Villains. Need to get our priorities straight.

“With prophetic commentary about manufactured reality TV and AI constructs, The Truman Show visualizes ethical quandaries around exploiting naivete for entertainment or business motives without full consent. Couched in technical mastery transporting viewers alongside Truman’s dawning awareness of deception, Weir weaves an alternately playful and poignant parable for modern media saturation dilemmas. A fantastic film for all those who enjoy thinking about the nature of reality”.
"Jim Carrey's performance in 'The Truman Show' blends comedy and pathos, showcasing his incredible range and the film’s ingenious critique of media culture. It’s Carey’s best performance of his career and I don’t think it’s particularly close" - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times.

"Weir envelops us in Truman’s world only to compellingly pull the veil back - forcing self-reflection on how our realities may similarly be carefully constructed or manipulated."

Kill Bill might be the most Tarantino movie of all. The two-part martial arts epic is a dazzling homage to grindhouse cinema, blending samurai films, spaghetti westerns, and revenge thrillers into a unique cinematic tapestry. The blood-soaked revenge saga follows The Bride on her ruthless quest to kill the team of assassins who betrayed her, led by the ultra enigmatic Bill. The scenes are both visually striking and crafted with meticulous detail – a combo that elevates the films to a form of high art.
Expert Quotes
“Uma Thurman delivers a career-best turn fueled by conviction in pursuit of vengeance against lover turned mortal enemy. Tarantino constructs lavish set-pieces weaponizing different film styles from anime to grindhouse befitting each sensational opponent with panache. Transcending pastiche, Kill Bill ultimately resonates as a saga of survival and female empowerment through sheer force of will”.
“Although they are two different movies, it’s really just one four hour movie which is what makes it so great. I recommend watching back to back for an optimal viewing experience”.
Kill Bill is a testament to the power of a well-told story, driven by a strong female lead and a director at the peak of his creative powers. #WiggleYourBigToe #The5PointPunch
"Uma Thurman's delivery of 'It's mercy, compassion, and forgiveness I lack; not rationality,' encapsulates The Bride's journey in 'Kill Bill,' defining her character's relentless pursuit and unwavering resolve."
“Kill Bill is without a doubt the most underrated Tarantino movie – I have it ranked second all time behind Pulp although that two seed is perpetually tied with Django, Inglorious and Reservoir”.
“KB is as much about its dialogue as its action, with lines like 'Silly Caucasian girl likes to play with Samurai swords' showcasing Tarantino's unique blend of humor and cultural pastiche."
"The line 'revenge is never a straight line. It's a forest, and like a forest, it's easy to lose your way... to get lost... to forget where you came in' speaks volumes about Tarantino's non-linear narrative approach in KB, drawing the audience into a maze of vengeance and redemption."

Expert Quotes
Most people don’t realize Fincher’s Fight Club is based on Chuck Palahniuk’s book. The literature clearly paved the way for the movie which is why Palahniuk is the true mastermind behind the film as well. He speaks to his inspiration and the book’s impact in this clip with Rogan; it was fascinating to hear him discuss the notion of Jordan Peterson’s ‘rough play’ hypothesis and the comparison to Dead Poets Society. The idea of a secret society that’s able to express themselves in their truest form without being judged by broader society is introspective food for thought regarding our innate desire to showcase our unfiltered opinions.
"Brad Pitt and Edward Norton deliver career-defining performances in 'Fight Club,' a film that fearlessly tackles themes of consumerism and disillusionment. Pitt embraced unchained bravado as radical Tyler Durden riling up modern man against soulless jobs and IKEA nesting. There Will Be Blood – 9.3
Release Year: 2007
Runtime: 2h 38m
Rating: PG13
Streaming: Amazon Prime Video, Youtube, Google Play, AppleTV
Genre: Western, Thriller
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson
Cast: Daniel Day Lewis, Paul Dano, Dillon Freasier, Colton Woodward, Erica Sullivan
There Will Be Blood is a compelling and intense portrait of ambition, power, and obsession as Daniel Day-Lewis delivers an extraordinary performance as Daniel Plainview, a ruthless oilman whose insatiable greed leads him on a path of destruction. The 19th century prospector (who adopts an orphaned boy to strengthen his image) seeks control over lucrative California oil fields and deals with evangelical locals trying to harvest profits, which drives his ambition to sinister lengths. Day-Lewis offers an iconic performance of unfettered capitalist greed warring with fleeting humanity as Anderson's arresting epic delivers a scathing indictment of moral corruption propelling American capitalism's foundations. Anderson meticulously tracks one man's seething megalomania and manipulation, eating his decency alive shot by gorgeous shot. There Will Be Blood stands as the defining big-screen American parable regarding voracity for material success and ownership destroying people from within at any cost.
Expert Quotes
The film is a masterful exploration of the dark side of the American Dream, set against the backdrop of the early 20th-century oil boom. With its stunning cinematography and powerful narrative, the movie delves deep into themes of capitalism, family, and religion. "There Will Be Blood" is a cinematic masterpiece that is as haunting as it is captivating, driven by Day-Lewis's powerhouse performance and Anderson's meticulous direction.
Daniel Day-Lewis deservedly won his second Oscar conjuring searing domination and strangulated love-want as cold capitalist Daniel Plainview. Day-Lewis is a force of nature, delivering a performance that is as mesmerizing as it is terrifying. I still feel chills as his voice escalates from playful scheming to volcanic hostility lashing the church fraud - ‘Drainage!’. This is Day Lewis’ best performance ever and it’s not particularly close".
"Paul Thomas Anderson has crafted a modern American epic in 'There Will Be Blood,' a film that is as much a psychological thriller as it is a historical drama. Anderson's direction and Day-Lewis's captivating performance combine to create a film that is not just a story about the oil boom but a profound study of the human condition."
Loosely Based on Upton Sinclair’s book Oil, Paul Anderson uses a similar kind of muckraking journalism by presenting the not-so-fictional Daniel Plainview in an unbridled manner. In the type of muckraking pursued by Sinclair, the journalism is not as much about running a smear campaign on the elite as it is about truth seeking and authenticity.
"The climax of 'There Will Be Blood,' culminating in Daniel Plainview's chilling declaration, 'I'm finished,' is a masterful convergence of character and narrative. This final scene, delivered with intense ferocity by Daniel Day-Lewis, encapsulates the self-destruction of a man consumed by his own greed and ambition, leaving audiences to ponder the true cost of ruthless capitalism”.

Director: Peter Weir

Dead Poets Society is an inspiring and poignant film that explores the impact of an extraordinary teacher who encourages his students to challenge the status quo and embrace the beauty of life. When a new English teacher arrives at a prestigious boarding school in 1959 New England, he inspires students to see poetry as a liberating means to seize the day rather than conform to expectations, but the rousing impact on impressionable youths triggers consequences once passions and personalities ignite. Effortlessly vacillating between playful optimism and empathy, Williams leaves an indelible imprint firing intellectual curiosity as Weir deftly charts social repression and burgeoning self-realization colliding with sympathy for multiple perspectives. The film is a moving tribute to the power of education, the arts, and the courage to think differently. Williams delivers a performance that is both humorous and heartfelt, masterfully conveying Keating's passion for poetry and his profound influence on his students. An arresting, Dead Poets Society remains timelessly resonant about inspirational mentors unlocking individualism and free thought.
Expert Quotes
“Robin Williams' talent for spinning captivating charm underlies his impact as eternally wistful teacher Keating - his rallies to find transcendent magic in mundane verses stir that same adolescent wonder watching it. His role as Mr Keating is eerily similar to his performance as Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting – sneaky two of the most uplifting performances in cinematic history”.
"'Dead Poets Society' is a deeply affecting film that speaks to the transformative power of teaching and the importance of fostering individual thought."
"The ‘O Captain! My Captain!’ and ‘The Powerful Play’ scenes stand as two of the most iconic in film history, symbolizing the profound impact an inspirational figure can have on young minds."
"In 'Dead Poets Society,' Robin Williams' Mr. Keating emerges not just as a teacher but as a beacon of authenticity and free thought. His character stands as the antithesis of a mindless capitalist system, embodying the ideals of creativity and individualism in a world increasingly driven by conformity and material success. Keating's passionate teaching methods and his encouragement of self-expression are a quiet yet powerful rebellion against the status quo, inspiring his students to seek a richer, more meaningful life beyond societal expectations." - Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune.
"The heart-wrenching suicide in 'Dead Poets Society' serves as a poignant commentary on the devastating effects of authoritarian and rigid capitalist structures. This tragedy underscores the film's critical message about the oppressive nature of these systems, which prioritize conformity and material success over individual well-being and creative expression. It highlights the dire consequences that can emerge when young, impressionable minds are forced into a mold that rejects their intrinsic need for self-exploration and emotional freedom. The film powerfully illustrates how such an environment, devoid of understanding and compassion, can lead to catastrophic outcomes."
My ‘boy’ just tried telling me “compromisation” isn’t a real word, citing lack of Oxford presence. Naturally I argued, “if you understand what I mean then it is by definition a valid word”. Claim obviously evolved into the “im right cuz literally every word is made up to begin with u by-the-book minimum wage monkey”. The question now isn’t whether compromisation is a word, it’s whether indistinct yet purposeful sounds (moans groans yawps whoops etc) are words. Just cuz they r hard2spell, doesn’t mean we can’t try. #ColonizeGruntsIntoTheDictionary #FunctionOverForm #TheWordParadox #DeadPoetsSociety #CallMeMrKeating – Salt&Tepper

" Jackman and Bale both deliver a multifaceted performance, portraying the charm and the hidden torment of a magician consumed by rivalry. Specifically, Bale AKA Alfred Borden’s role is a testament to his ability to inhabit deeply layered characters, driving the film’s tense and mysterious atmosphere."
In the Prestige, each scene is a piece of a larger, intricate mystery. I know this is bold, but the Prestige is not only my favorite Nolan movie ever, it’s my favorite movie of all time period. The Bale vs Jackman rivalry coupled with Nolan’s mastery, the involvement of Nikola Tesla, the sci-fi but not too sci-fi undertones and the astonishing ending make for my personal 1 seed – AntiMentalPrison

Christopher Nolan not only astonishes with a twist that is both shocking and satisfying but also encapsulates the film's central themes of obsession and sacrifice. The final revelation redefines the entire narrative, leaving the audience to grapple with the profound implications of the magicians' duel for supremacy. The film stars Tom Cruise as Lt. Daniel Kaffee, a Harvard grad + Navy lawyer who exudes a mix of cocky charm and earnestness, and Jack Nicholson as the formidable Col. Nathan R. Jessup, whose iconic performance cements the film’s intensity. The slick yet green military lawyer Lt. Kaffee, is up against the hardened Col. Jessup who is ultimately baited into barking one of the most iconic lines in all of cinema: "You can't handle the truth!" Demi Moore, as Lt. Cdr. JoAnne Galloway, adds a layer of steadfast determination and integrity, and the culminating courtroom scenes, pulsating with dynamic verbal exchanges, capture the high stakes of the military justice system. A Few Good Men is a compelling blend of gripping narrative + ethical quandary and delivers gripping courtroom fireworks exposing institutional corruption at the highest levels.
Expert Quotes
"Sorkin's verbal pyrotechnics ignite volatile culture clashes between Cruise's brash Navy lawyer and Nicholson's battle-tested colonel hiding scandal. That courtroom confrontation still crackles with confrontational energy - Cruise and Nicholson locked in a moral tug-of-war for the ages."
"'You can't handle the truth,' delivered with piercing intensity by Jack Nicholson, is more than a memorable line; it encapsulates the clash between truth and the often harsh realities of power and duty within the military framework. It reverberates as a defining moment in cinema, challenging not just Tom Cruise's character but the audience itself, to confront the uncomfortable complexities of moral accountability”.
With Aaron Sorkin's electrifying script as ammunition, Reiner stages explosive moral and legal clashes around honor, duty and truth. Supporting performances crackle, in particular Nicholson's esteemed bluster devolving into steely vitriol on the stand. The line "Did you order the code red?!" echoes for the ages. As relevant today as examining unchecked military authority, it remains a powder-keg of electric drama.
"The power of Nicholson’s monologue, particularly in the line 'I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it', lies in its raw portrayal of a man burdened by the weight of decisions made in the name of national security. This line stands as a stark representation of the moral dilemmas faced by those in power, highlighting the tension between the demands of duty and the ethical imperative to uphold justice and truth."

The Gentlemen is a classic (and subjectively the best) Guy Ritchy production. Matthew McConaughey AKA Mickey Pearson is a suave American expat/kingpin who builds a highly profitable cannabis empire in London. When word gets out that he’s trying to cash out, an array of plots and schemes unfold. Power, greed, business, gangster… all the makings of a Ritchy masterpiece that will keep you on your toes - this is the film he was working towards his whole career. “The Gentlemen is all seductive swagger, irreverent quips and effortless style” read one of the top rated reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. It is “a star-studded, sophisticated action comedy done the right way” as pronounced by the Miramax synopsis. Even chatGPT agrees “the action scenes are well-choreographed and entertaining, while the dialogue is sharp and witty”. Hugh Grant, Charlie Hunnam and Jeremy Strong are some of the other gentlemen who act as players on the board. It's a rollercoaster of double-crosses and jocose one-liners that keeps you guessing until the very end: an absolute treat for those who love their crime capers with a side of class. Fire it up, learn about the laws of the jungle and witness the result of a compelling chess game in order to decide the future of an empire.
Expert Quotes:
“The Gentlemen is up there with the best crime movies of all time. Maybe it doesn’t fit the quintessential American stereotype of a ‘mobster’ movie, but in my eyes this European twist off is better than the Godfather, Casino, Reservoir Dogs and Scarface. The only gang/crime movie I have ranked above the Gentlemen is The Departed which is just one of a kind”.
“The way the movie is constructed via multiple narratives, storytelling, flashbacks, and then ultimately in real time, is utterly fascinating to watch unfold. Hugh Grant’s Fletcher does a phenomenal job narrating the story of Mickey Pearson’s rise to stardom and creation of his empire. This is Guy Ritchy’s magnum opus and it’s not particularly close”.
“I was so baked the first time I watched this movie that when it ended I didn’t really grasp the magnitude of what just happened. I knew it was ultra quality cinema but I wasn’t in the headspace to savor and comprehend it all. I rewatched it again right away and after the second viewing it all clicked. Maybe I’m just a McConnaughey cock rider but this is one of the best movies of all time in my eyes”.
“Ta ta ta ta ta. I mean come on. Obviously Mickey Pearson is up there with some of the most captivating characters in all of cinema, but the Charlie Hunnam / Hugh Grant dynamic truly elevates this film into the elite category. The characters are extremely well drawn out and they all have their own personal flavor – their multifaceted relationships make the film completely unpredictable. I’ve never been on my toes watching a movie as much as I was when I consumed this British crime, action beauty of a flick”.
